"The dangers of the Internet"

"The dangers of the Internet" an inquest decides.

October 2012 - a 15 year old girl jumps in front of a train. While I feel upset she felt the need to do this, I myself after last night do not feel in the happiest of moods, I must question the direction of the blame.

The internet? Why is it the internet to blame?

Who gave her so much access to the internet in the first place?

I can agree there are a few problems with the internet. She managed to obtain prescription drugs. I see adverts for these popup on sites, have received emails for these in the past, this  kind of thing does need to stop.

But we constantly seek to blame others when something tragic goes wrong.

You have a child? A teenager? Do you actually know how to limit there access to the internet? Yes? Good. You know to be careful.

No? Well, if it does go wrong, I'm sorry, I really am, but don't immediately blame "the internet" if it does. You shouldn't be giving them access if you don't know how to control it in the first place. If you suspect the internet, take away the computer, take away the phone. Ignore any cries of complaint. It will be better than what could happen surely?

I am knowledgeable with the internet, sometimes I get into trouble with it still. We all do. If you aren't watching them 24/7, or have something in place. They will. Be it a virus, or something far more serious like what happened in this circumstance.

My main problem is that they use mass blocking techniques against the internet, filter entire sites, rather than surgical strikes. If we keep limiting the internet when something happens like this, because people refuse to take responsibility for themselves and those around them, there will be nothing left but small disparate networks, and the people who sneak around anyway will have free roam.

I am sorry. I really am for what happened to her.
